My Favourite Movies: Tangled

My Favourite Movies: Tangled

Tangled. This 2010 animated masterpiece is a retelling of the Rapunzel fairy tale, and it absolutely stole my heart. Not only is it just a joy to watch (the lantern scene—be still, my swooning heart), but it also showcases many of the storytelling elements I love most: strong heroines, charismatic heroes, and a sprinkle of suspense and adventure.

Strong, Independent Heroine

Rapunzel is the kind of heroine I adore. She’s curious, determined, and resourceful, even after spending 18 years locked away in a tower. When the opportunity to escape finally arrives, she takes it—and doesn’t shy away from facing her fears. She doesn’t need Flynn Rider to save her; she simply needs a partner to help her navigate her new world, and I love that dynamic.

Charismatic Hero Who Falls Hard

Speaking of Flynn Rider… easily my favorite Disney animated hero. He’s a charming thief with a dry sense of humor and a hardened exterior, but it’s Rapunzel’s light and unrelenting optimism that cracks his shell. Watching him fall for her first—and hard—is one of the most satisfying arcs in the movie. I mean, all those stolen glances as she's just being her amazing self? Sigh.

Grumpy-Sunshine Dynamic

I have to linger on this one because it’s such a favorite trope of mine. The contrast between Flynn’s cynicism and Rapunzel’s sunshine personality creates not just humor, but an irresistible chemistry. Don't believe he's a grump? Check out his lyrics in I've Got a Dream:

I have dreams, like you, no, really!
Just much less touchy-feely
They mainly happen somewhere warm and sunny
On an island that I own
Tanned and rested and alone
Surrounded by enormous piles of money

He just wants to be alone! And wow, the frowns and grumbles he gives her when they leave the tower after his smolder doesn't work? It's the same dynamic I love exploring in my stories: two people who seem mismatched on the surface but are exactly what the other needs deep down.

Intrigue and Suspense

Then there's Mother Gothel—one of the most manipulative villains ever (although her Mother Knows Best is one of my fave musical numbers in the movie). The way she gaslights Rapunzel? Ugh! The tension she creates keeps you on the edge of your seat, especially when Rapunzel starts piecing together the truth.

And then the end? When she offers to sacrifice herself to save him, but he won't accept that, and then sacrifices himself for her? I get goosebumps every time I watch that scene. The tears. The joy. The unconditional love!

Why I Love It

At its heart, Tangled is a story about trust, vulnerability, and finding your courage. It’s a tale of two people who challenge each other to grow and believe in themselves. That positive, supportive dynamic is central to the relationships in my novels as well, and it’s what makes Tangled such a perfect fit for my list of top 5 movies of all time.

So, if you haven’t watched Tangled recently, consider this your sign to stream it tonight. And if you’re already a fan, tell me your favorite part! (Is it Flynn’s smolder? Because… so same.)

(Or is it the lanterns? Because I've yet to watch that scene without crying.)

Ever After: A Tale of Love, Trust, and Independence

Ever After: A Tale of Love, Trust, and Independence

I love a smart heroine -- not to mention a hero who falls first and fast!

If you haven’t seen Ever After, drop everything and add it to your must-watch list! This 1998 gem is a wonderful retelling of Cinderella, set in Renaissance-ish France. Starring Drew Barrymore as Danielle (our Cinderella) and Dougray Scott as the prince, it blends romance, history, and personal growth—three elements I cherish in storytelling.

Strong, Independent Woman

Danielle is everything I admire in a heroine. She’s smart, resourceful, and fiercely independent. Can you say "meet cute by pelting him with apples"? Despite her challenging circumstances, she doesn’t sit around waiting to be rescued. Instead, she takes charge of her destiny, standing up for herself and those she loves.

Charismatic Man Who Falls Hard

Enter Prince Henry, played by Dougray Scott (who yes, I crushed on for many years after the movie). Henry is the embodiment of the kind of hero I adore--gorgeous, charismatic, commanding, and yet he falls first and fast, completely smitten by Danielle's wit, bravery, and kindness. His willingness to defy societal expectations and make sacrifices for Danielle is a beautiful portrayal of deep, unconditional love.

Intrigue

While Ever After is primarily a romance, it weaves in elements of suspense. From the wicked stepmother’s scheming to the climactic rescue, there’s a tension that propels the story forward. (and seriously, the navel-to-nose "rescue" is one of my favorites in any movie)

Historical Backdrop

The historical setting of Ever After isn't just a backdrop; it’s integral to the story. The Renaissance-inspired time period, with its vibrant culture and societal norms, adds depth and richness to the narrative. It truly highlights Danielle's unique character, her strength and loyalty. Plus, Leonardo da Vinci is a side character! Mind you, it's still a fantastical setting, close enough to reality we get to enjoy its timelessness, but far enough away to provide a satisfying love story.

Trust and Lies

One of the central themes in Ever After is trust. Danielle lies to Henry about her true identity for much of the movie, creating a significant obstacle in their relationship. Trust is the bedrock of any relationship, and it's my favorite theme to write about... although it can be a fine line. How much deception can the characters forgive?

Positive and Supportive Relationship

At the heart of Ever After is a love story built on mutual respect and support. Danielle and Henry inspire each other to grow and become better versions of themselves. This is exactly the kind of relationship dynamic I find most fulfilling in my fiction. Relationships that are positive, supportive, and devoid of toxicity, where both partners grow together, are the kind that make the best stories.

Ever After isn't just a movie I love; it’s a story that resonates deeply with the themes and tropes I adore and strive to bring to life in my own storytelling. I grew up reading fantasy and moved into contemporary mysteries as an adult, but rewatching "Ever After" and feeling all the swoons was another hint that I was a Romance fan all along. I just hadn't realized it!

So yeah, go watch it. Fall in love. And tell me what you thought (unless you already love it as much as I do, then just tell me that!!)
